Stratford Tax Preparer Pleads Guilty for Tax Evasion

Lenworth Haynes of Stratford pled guilty to one count of tax evasion on Wednesday.

A 55-year-old Stratford man pled guilty to tax evasion Wednesday for failing to report to the government more than $255,000 worth of taxable income tied to his tax preparation business.

Lenworth Haynes waived his right to indictment and pled guilty to one count of tax evasion, which carries a maximum term of imprisonment of five years and a fine of up to $100,000, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

"From 2006 to 2008, Haynes evaded his personal federal income taxes by failing to declare income he earned from his tax preparation business," the statement reads.

"During those three years, Haynes should have reported total taxable income of $255,071.38. Instead, he reported taxable income of negative $3,761, resulting in a loss to the government of $82,704."

Haynes has agreed to pay back taxes, plus interest and penalities, according to the statement.

The Stratford man is scheduled to be sentenced July 10.
