Plane Crash at Sikorsky Sends Two to Hospital

One passenger had to be extricated.

A small plane carrying two passengers crashed this evening as it came in for a landing at Sikorsky Airport in Stratford, Conn.

Authorities said the two passengers were transported to a local hospital - one with serious injuries had to be extricated, according to Stratford Fire Department Local 998.

Reports of the crash came in just before 10 p.m. According to the fire union, the plane's left wing was torn off when the landing gear struck a fence during its approach. Photographs posted on the fire union's Facebook page show the plane covered in foam, which was sprayed either to extinguish a fire or to prevent one.

A representative from the Federal Aviation Administration's New England office was not immediately available for comment, nor was a spokesman for the Stratford Police Department. The Connecticut Post quoted an FAA official as saying that a Piper PA-32 hit a fence as it came in to land at the airport, which is owned by the City of Bridgeport but located in Stratford.

The Stratford fire and police departments were on scene, as were Bridgeport emergency responders. Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch was also on his way to the airport, his communications manager said as she drove past the police blockade on Main Street.
