Newton Scores the Party Endorsement in the 23rd Senate District

His comeback victory points to a three-way primary in August in the district, which includes part of Stratford.

A primary , which includes part of , became all but certain following the surprise win by Ernest Newton II of the Democratic Party endorsement this week.

The OnlyInBridgeport blog reported that Newton’s surprise win over incumbent state Sen. Edwin Gomes, D-Bridgeport, and state Rep. Andres Ayala, D-Bridgeport, advanced his comeback from a prison sentence that cost him the 23rd Senate seat. Newton pleaded guilty in 2005 to accepting a $5,000 bribe and served three years in prison.

Newton’s party endorsement victory almost guarantees a three-way primary between Gomes, an incumbent with strong labor union support, and Ayala, who has raised the most money is supported by Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch.

The district is controlled by Bridgeport Democrats, so whoever wins the primary would probably win the election. The section of the district in Stratford is usually not a factor, but that could change for a close, three-way primary.
