McMahon Wins GOP Senate Nod, But Shays to Run Primary Challenge

Decker, Formica, Winsley, Obsitnik and Roraback win party endorsements for congressional races.

Linda McMahon won the Republican nomination Friday to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, but it looks like there will be a primary for the party’s nod just as .

The Connecticut Post reported that McMahon, the wealthy chief executive for World Wrestling Entertainment, won the nomination on the first ballot at the party convention in Hartford, but that former 4th District congressman Christopher Shays qualified to challenge her in a primary on Aug. 14.

Democrats will also vote on Aug. 14 in a primary between 5th District congressman Chris Murphy, who received the party endorsement on May 12, and former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz.

The Hartford Courant reported that state Sen. Andrew Roraback, R-Goshen, won the party endorsement for the 5th Congressional District on the third ballot at the convention in Hartford, but businesswoman Lisa Wilson-Foley of Simsbury and Afghanistan war veteran Justin Bernier both qualified to run primary challenges by receiving over 15 percent of the delegates.

Democrats have endorsed Chris Donovan to run for the seat being vacated by Murphy, but he could also face a three-way primary on Aug. 14.

Republicans also endorsed John Henry Decker, a financial planner from West Hartford, for the 1st Congressional District, East Lyme First Selectman Paul Formica for the 2nd District, Wayne Winsley for the 3rd District and Steve Obsitnik of Westport for the 4th District.

Daria Novak qualified for a primary against Formica and Christopher Meek qualified for a primary against Obsitnick.
