In Hurricane Sandy's Wake: 2 Dead in CT, 600,000 without Power

High tide still a concern Tuesday morning as the storm moves away from the region.

A Mansfield woman was killed by a falling tree and an Easton firefighter is reported to have died when a tree fell on his truck as Hurricane Sandy ravaged Connecticut's shoreline Monday night and left more than 600,000 customers in the dark.

Now a post-tropical cyclone, Sandy was moving west at 15 mph across southern Pennyslvania at 5 a.m. Tuesday morning. Its sustained maximum winds had diminished to 65 mph, the National Weather Service reported.

The deadly storm is expected to weaken over the next 48 hours as Connecticut begins to deal with extensive shoreline flooding and widespread outages.

CL&P is currently reporting that 38 percent of its customers, some 476,603 residents and businesses across the state are without power this morning. That figure appears to be down from a high of 600,000 outages the utility was reporting at the height of the storm Monday night.

United Illuminating this morning is reporting that 149,397 of its customers, which 46.6 percent of its coverage area is without power this morning.

On Monday night, Malloy said thousands of residents were trapped by rising flood waters and would have to try to survive the night in their homes. He compared the situation to Hurricane Katrina and asked residents to hang towels or sheets from their windows so that rescuers could find them when it was safe.

“Get to a higher floor, as high as you have to. Don’t be near a window because there’s a lot of wind and there’s nothing good to see at this point. Do not try to walk through (the water). Don’t try to swim through it do not try to drive through it," he said. “Our worst fears are being reached in terms of flooding conditions."

In Norwalk, two "high water rescue teams" were dispatched to calls of people needing to be evacuated from flooded residences. Fires were a problem elsewhere on the shoreline because flooding prevented firefighters from responding. At least three homes were lost in Old Greenwich.

Early Tuesday, according to the Hartford Courant, the Connecticut National Guard was ready to help evacuate residents, particularly from the state's southwestern corner.

In central Connecticut, power outages and wind damage were less severe, but most schools across the state remained closed on Tuesday. Temperatures were expected to fall into the 50s for highs and the 30s for lows over the next five days as many residents wait for their power to be restored.

4:00 pm on Saturday, November 3, 2012 Communist, center-right?! That's a distorted lens If you for one minute believe the O MAN is not a COMMIE. I have a Bridge in brooklyn for sale cheap you can HAVE. Thats right we have a COMMUNIST PRESIDENT. Care to DISPUTE THAT!!!
Tom Falconieri November 3, 2012 at 10:26 pm
@Don Charles
TOTALLY 100% Correct. This is not the first time this has happened with UNIONS. This is a DISGRACE and the powers to be should correct this BS. But the DEMS WONT the unions have the dems in their pockets like nickles and dimes.
sock puppet November 3, 2012 at 11:27 pm
Funny how the flooding in New Orleans was all Bush's fault, but Obama gets a free pass on this. People still without power, driving into different states to purchase gas, looting, etc...If Bush hates white people, as Kanye West accused on a music awards show, then Obama hates New Yorkers.
sock puppet November 3, 2012 at 11:32 pm
actually, that should have read that Bush hates black people. Also, turns out Luca Duff Cruz is the name of (the singer/actress) Hillary Duff's son. Fellow sock puppet:)
sebastian dangerfield November 3, 2012 at 11:35 pm
Sock
So true....But!! He got osama! Despite lots of bad stuff out there, obama is not responsible for any of it. Soldiers get osama=obama. Soldiers urinate on kiran or kill innicent villagees= individual soldiers. Unemployment?= bush. Obama hugs a few people in n.j. photo op....then campaigns. Understandable...except thats his job and liberals were faulting romney for campaigning one day early.
sebastian dangerfield November 3, 2012 at 11:38 pm
And ...when your president you benefit by the bully pulpit and free air force one transport. But, when crisis presents...you also have to manage...not campaign. Thats the tradeoff
sock puppet November 3, 2012 at 11:50 pm
Perhaps if gas prices didn't double during Obama's term, folks would be able to run their generators for less.
sock puppet November 4, 2012 at 12:00 am
According to the media, Bush gets blamed for Hurricane Katrina.. Obama gets a free pass on Hurricane Sandy. Someone please explain.
David Chesler November 4, 2012 at 01:17 am
b.j.'s is a place, not a time. 4.00 is worse than 2.30 but that comparison is using an unusual circumstance that is not representative of either president's competence.
sebastian dangerfield November 4, 2012 at 01:20 am
Another example of the compliant main stream media--and a prediction:
Im guessing that you wont see any pictures of Obama smiling and waving and campaigning this weekend. You may see coverage of the audiences that he is speaking to--you may see other examples that he is popular, but the press will be extra careful , not to portray a smiling guy, with all the carnage that exists in this area. And if that is not an example of a totally biased media, I dont know what is. (and yeah, they most likely will show romney happy and laughing, just to boot.) If you are on that side--fine. I just think you have to stop and consider how bad romney is, or how good obama is--because obviously , you are not given a fair portrayal...and you should stop and think about the 'honesty' that is absent anymore in the news media.

one other political question for anyone who can help me to understand:
why are you for chris murphy over linda mcmahon. And please dont tell me, why you are not for mcmahon, tell me why you are for murphy. Seems like everyone out there , who has endorsed murphy says " im for murphy, because linda mcmahon is...blah blah blah. Is the only reason to vote for this guy, really because he has a (D) next to his name? Mcmahons stance on social issues and fiscal policies seem ok. I dont see anything interesting about murphy....just an empty suit, career politician.
Irv Weinstein November 4, 2012 at 02:26 am
Just how bright is a bimbo who blows over $100 million of her husbands fortune on her huge ego trip?
Tell us genius what you love about her?
Tom Falconieri November 4, 2012 at 02:46 am
She is smart enough to make enough money to spend 100 MILLION bucks on anything she wants. And you should KISS her BUTT and vote for her. Because Murphy does not have a CLUE. You progressive liberals are beyond comprehension. Explain to me EINSTEIN WHAT THE HELL MURPHY OR ANY OTHER COMMIE DEM HAS DUN FOR THIS COUNTRY OTHER THAN DESTROYING IT. Fascinating how you Commies do not have a clue!!! The 100 million bucks went in to this states economy not taken out of it EINSTEIN!!!!
sebastian dangerfield November 4, 2012 at 02:51 am
Irv (sebastian)
Like I said, why not tell me what is good about murphy. Did he spend any of his own money on his campaign? Anything. Just let me know why you like him--i keep hearing from you guys how mcmahon is unqualified because she is rich and spends her own money on her campaign. But I looked at this guys record, and he has been there for a long time, and has not distinguished himself one iota. So, if you are voting for him, just because he is a democrat--just say that. At least its honest. Because I checked out everything-and he is a failure by nearly every measure.
Me November 4, 2012 at 02:55 am
bimbo? that's why people won't give credence to people like you Irv, because of your rank viewpoint. There were thousands of ways you could have expressed your disdain to McMahon, but instead you prefer to bring yourself down to a very low level & call someone a "bimbo." Very mature.
Why I prefer Linda over Chris? Simple, McMahon with her husband took a product, even after bacnkruptcy, & made it into a gobal-wide billion dollar business. That shows me a person, an entrepeneur, who has the creativity to generate revenue stream. Murphy, a career politician, who has earned over a $1M has a negative net worth. A NEGATIVE NET WORTH after making over a $1M. Not a great confidence that he knows how to generate revenue. Why should I trust him with our taxes? Take names & political party symbols out of it. If you are a hiring manager for a financial position and you look at two resumes & credit checks and you see a resume for a person who made nothing into a billion dollar business to become a multi-millionaire & you see a resume for a person who has been paid over a $1M and is still over $200K in arrears, who would you logically gravitate to oversee your monies? Our fragile economy is the most important thing. The womens health care and Roe vs Wade is just distraction & scare tactic by the Dems. Since Roe vs Wade we have had 5 Republican Presidents & as many Congress majorities, none have broached overturning Roe vs Wade or lessened women's healthcare, & none will.
Me November 4, 2012 at 02:56 am
and you never did answer Luca's question Irv... why do you support Murphy? Not why don't you support Linda, but what makes Murphy so great. Didn't answer it because you probably don't have an articulate thought-out answer.
Tom Falconieri November 4, 2012 at 03:12 am
Tell us genius what you love about her?
She is SMART and built a MULTI MILLION DOLLAR COMPANY THAT EMPLOYS HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE. Now EINSTEIN EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT MURPHY ACCOMPLISHED. OTHER THAN RAISING TAXES AND A HINGE HEAD FOR THE COMMIE O MAN!!! Bet you cant answer this. As Luca asked tell us one thing he DID. Your turn Einstein!!!

Look at the that Irv doesn't have an answer much less an articulate one, just a flippant nonsense response. Ah, yes Irv, your endorsement for Murphy and anti-Linda endorsement is really persausive.

We know this boy did not have to die. People like Irv, jimmy Pursey, and many other Democrats , prove this is not always a fatal affliction.
Nickolas Coke, Boy Born Without Brain, Dies At 3 Nickolas Coke, a Colorado boy who survived three years despite being born without a brain, has died. The boy from Pueblo, Colo., was born with anencephaly, a condition that caused him to only have a brain stem.

The funny thing is, the six towns in Connecticut that have municipal-owned power companies? Every one of them pays lower rates than we do and had power restored faster than their neighboring CL&P-serviced towns.
So, you know, apparently government is good for something.
the michael November 4, 2012 at 10:42 am
vote a straight republican ticket.......end the insanity...bring America back from being the laughing stock of the globe....and if the "people"..riot after Romneys victory....emphatically........squeltch it....
David Chesler November 4, 2012 at 12:31 pm
Phil, you're comparing two government entities. (The non-municipal companies are so entangled with state regulators that they're not private.) And sure enough, those run by smaller governmental units do better.

Not gonna happen. Obama will be reelected. I think that is pretty clear. What will be interesting is in the future now, is blue states like connecticut and new york, --what their reaction will be, when california, another blue state, riddled with debt as a result of their dem policies of supporting public unions. Obama now will be elected with no mandate-and we are faced with 4 more years of exactly the same. The only question , it appears , is if romney wins the popular vote, but I think its pretty clear , obama will stay in office.

To clarify, for those who are wondering why we can't just take the two cats up with us, we alreadyRead More have four cats, and a dog. We could only take two of the four cats with us, plus the dog (who is 14yrs. old.) The limit for the rental is three pets... this was a hard decision for us all. We would have taken them all if we could.

Now that Sam has been found, the reason he ran off was due to the sound of gunfire at RooseveltRead More Forest in the early afternoon as his master was getting ready to take him out of his car. All had been quiet, the park was open, so the loud bangs were a surprise - both to Sam and his "Dad". To the best of my knowledge, when the shooting range is used by the Stratford PD, the park is closed to the public. It was that way always and I believe still is. But now, with non-Stratford police personnel using the range, obviously the Park is NOT closed as was observed/heard yesterday at 2 separate time periods of the day. The range is used by at least one other police department. Of course, there could be unauthorized people using the range too. I just don't know. But what I do know that yesterday (Wed), there was shooting early afternoon, and then again around 6PM. I observed at around 5:00PM, a little boy running up the dirt road that leads to the shooting range. The park remained opened all day! The shooting was NOT being done by the Stratford Police. People do not always stick to the trails, and as we all know, children can be quite curious. Who is to say a child and/or adult gets near the berm or behind it and someone shoots over the berm? What goes up, has to come down. I also was told that neighbors say there is shooting going on quite frequently, even on Sundays. I doubt that this is from Stratford PD, because outdoor shooting usually occurs for a week or so, twice a year. Tighter controls must be done! Surely, the parking area can be checked for vehicles... but I observed yesterday people entering the parking area (adjacent to the driveway leading up to the range) on foot, on bicycles, and motorcycles. So people could be in the park even when no vehicles are observed in the lot. Safety is key here! Procedures need to be put in place and perhaps limitations on when other police department(s) can use the range. It is not fair to the surrounding residents to have to hear the bang bang bang on Saturdays and Sundays. It scares some of them, and I know that one person who lives nearby says her dog gets scared right inside their house! What will it take? A child or an adult wandering near the range, thinking it is OK because the Forest is open... and then, all of a sudden, there is shooting and one gets shot, especially a child? This may sound extreme, but children can move quick and suddenly. I think of that little boy running up toward the range. He could have very well traveled through the woods. I can picture bullets being shot over the berm, not on purpose, but it can happen. Or shots go to the left or to the right; and people could be in the same general area - out of sight of the shooters. Bottom Line: The "public" can not be in the park while the range is "live", or in other words, when there is shooting taking place. As how to ensure that the public is not in the park, is not for me to determine. But the Town has to step up to the plate and address this very important issue.

Reagan's quote is from the 1988 GOP convention that 'facts are stupid things'...John Adams made theRead More original quote.
Steve Raguskus June 15, 2013 at 10:20 am
I hope people note how these comments go. Anonymous right-wingers try to change the discussion,Read More prove a point that no one is arguing, and then declare victory. Both "Goodie Bassett" and "Reagan Night" say Ms. Daponte is lying because Tony Smith won't be removed from office. I just re-read Beth's piece to see where she made this claim, but she never said anything of the sort. What she did say was "Both Tony and Linda serve until January 1, 2016." So, where's the "half-truth"? The point of the post is that the new land use District II, comprised of the 3rd & 4th council districts, has no representation on any of these boards. Tony Smith will be the District II Zoning Commissioner, even though he doesn't live in that district. The extreme right can't defend this, so they try to change the subject.
richard brown June 15, 2013 at 12:29 pm
Isn't it odd that the half truths are written by people that won't sigh their real name but theRead More Democrats sign theirs. Huh, guess they don't want to be held accountable for their inuendo's and false acusations.

What a wonderful town we live in that the only problem we have worthwhile to discuss is golf cartsRead More driving down the street! WHO CARES? I have kids riding their go carts and mini bikes around our neighborhood. They learn how to fix them and have some fun which doen't include stealing or damaging my property. Actually I enjoy helping them and occasionally lend them a tool or two. The parents make them be considerate by not allowing them to ride around early morning or late evenings. SO WHO CARES! I guess you will want to stop all the people at Oronoque condos from driving across the road up there too? Hey..on the road is on the road. Again, WHO CARES? Get informed and worry about a real problem facing us here in town!
