UPDATE: Town Postpones Halloween to Nov. 10

Halloween had been postponed again because of weather.

Updated Wednesday 11:30 a.m.

Stratford has decided to postpone townwide Halloween activities to Saturday, Nov. 10, due to the impending storm expected to hit the area today.

"Due to the impending storm, Halloween in Stratford has been moved to Saturday, Nov. 10," Marc Dillon, the mayor's chief of staff, wrote in a 11:17 a.m. email Wednesday.

Halloween's a Go Despite Impending Nor'easter (Posted Monday)

For those wondering: Halloween, in spite of an impending nor'easter, is still on for Wednesday, Nov. 7, after being postponed a week because of Hurricane Sandy.

"It is set for Wednesday," Marc Dillon, the mayor's chief of staff, wrote in an email to Stratford Patch. "No plans on moving it again. Sandy was a unique event."

The National Weather Service (NWS) in New York has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the area on Wednesday night.

According to the NWS, "A significant coastal storm will likely impact the tri-state region Wednesday and Thursday. Confidence continues to increase that strong gusty winds...rain/wintry precipication...coastal flooding and additional beach erosion will result from this system."

In light of the forecast some Stratford residents are calling for the cancelation of Halloween, while others say use your best judgement when deciding to go out.

"Canceling to keep kids safe and out of harm's way would be the smart thing!" commented a resident on the Stratford Patch Facebook page.

"No need to cancel. Make a judgement call!" wrote another.

And yet another resident commented, as people continue to recover from Hurricane Sandy, "giving some normality in an otherwise far from normal situation is sometimes the best medicine."

I really hope that Halloween gets moved to a safer date for our children. It has already been rescheduled once due to the storm so I don't see the big deal with changing it again. Milford has just changed the date to Friday for the safety of the children and I commend them for that. They are forecasting 60mph winds for Wednesday evening.

Fairfield has changed their trick or treating to the weekend. I think this is a smart move. We changed the date once why not change it again?
michael lapuglia November 06, 2012 at 09:51 PM
change it to friday ...its perfect weather
Joey Taliercio November 07, 2012 at 12:02 AM
change Halloween to Friday or Saturday. its better weather. we do a haunted trail here at my house that 1,000 people or more go to from the community. 269 wilbrook road
Patrick S November 07, 2012 at 12:08 AM
Move Halloween to this weekend. People will not go out tomorrow if the weather isn't good.
Rob Simon November 07, 2012 at 12:10 AM
Bad enough everyone has had to deal with the weather challenges, why compound that and ruin the kid's Halloween....move it to Friday!...
John Kuroghlian November 07, 2012 at 12:17 AM
If you want my opinion, our mayor should change Halloween to the weekend. Two reasons....1) There will be great weather on the weekend.....and 2) There is a huge haunted house that goes on in our community on 269 wilbrook road....This haunted house is very awesome and the whole community knows about it ....CHANGE HALLOWEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RICHARD A. MARINI November 07, 2012 at 12:42 AM
I agree ! Everyone looks forward to the haunted house at 269 Wilbrook road every year !! please dont take this away from all the people who go there every year !!! So please move Halloween to friday or saturday ...... Weather is looking good on those day's !!!!
Ryan Jovanelly November 07, 2012 at 12:55 AM
Change Halloween to the weekend, there will be better weather on the weekend. Also there is always a great haunted house that goes on in our community on 269 Wilbrook road!!!!
Sean November 07, 2012 at 01:11 AM
No reason to put our kids in harm's way, no matter how small the risk may be (and i don't see tomorrow's storm as a small risk given an increased likelihood of power outages and downed trees/limbs post-Sandy). Hoping for Halloween this weekend.
Michael Kiosse November 07, 2012 at 01:16 AM
You should really change halloween to the weekend because the weather tomorrow isnt going to be good. Also noone wants to miss the amazing Haunted Trail that goes on at 269 Wilbrook Road!!!!
Eric Ross November 07, 2012 at 06:46 AM
Come on you cant have Halloween in a storm! whether its officially on or not if the storms bad nobody's going to go out anyways. why not change it to the weekend? i really want to go to that haunted house...
Kathleen Prophet November 07, 2012 at 01:03 PM
I agree ! Friday or Saturday would be great! Otherwise no Halloween for our kids. Really ?
Barbara November 07, 2012 at 01:21 PM
The town should really reconsider having Halloween tonight. Moving it to the weekend would be the safer and wiser decision!!
Lyn November 07, 2012 at 01:46 PM
No one should have to decide whether or not to go trick or treating. Of course you want your kids to go trick or treating, but let's not schedule it on a day when we are having cold and windy conditions. We have had to reschedule due a storm, because there is an option to move it, why wouldn't the decision makers on this schedule Halloween for a weekend night when the weather is reported to be much better?
Lyn November 07, 2012 at 01:50 PM
Is anyone using their head? Are town officials just being obstinant just to prove they can? Logic, common sense, brains, use them!!
susan chantlos November 07, 2012 at 02:22 PM
Called the Mayors office. Can't speak to the Mayor and HE will decide whether I will get a call back. Apathetic to Halloween and the safety of our kids. His representative conveyed that his attitude is: I'm not changing the date for Halloween. Its up to the parents to decide to let their kids go out tonight. We are getting hit with a Nor'easter tonight with 50 mph winds, rain and snow. HOW did this guy get elected????? CHANGE THE DATE FOR HALLOWEEN. I agree with Lyn. Use some common sense.
Mike Reynolds November 07, 2012 at 02:32 PM
I don't understand. Why do we need an elected official to tell us whether its safe or not for your children to go our for Halloween? Can't you, as a parent, decide if its safe for your children to wander out in a nor'easter? I'm telling my kids they can't go. End of story.
susan chantlos November 07, 2012 at 02:45 PM
There is NO REASON not to reschedule Halloween for a safer night, like this weekend. And we don't NEED an elected official to tell us whether its safe to let our children go out. You are missing the point here. The debate is why the Mayor refuses to reschedule to a safer night. KIDS MATTER, telling them that they can't go out on Halloween is just sad. They look forward to this night all year. Why put them into such a disappointing situation when THERE IS NO NEED to ? Whats important to my kids is important to me. A Mayor who clearly is apathetic to children is NOT a mayor I will vote for.
Allison Schofield November 07, 2012 at 02:47 PM
The point everyone is making is that Halloween should be postponed to Friday or Saturday BECAUSE parents will have enough sense not to send their children out tonight which means no Halloween for the kids this year. Our kids didn't ask for Sandy to come and postpone Halloween for them...they are missing out due to no act of their own and it doesn't have to be so if the Mayor would just postpone trick or treating until Friday or Saturday...like other Mayors and officials are doing. Its not about officials telling parents whether its safe or not...that's obvious. But he can use common sense to delay it a few days so the Stratford kids can enjoy the holiday that comes once a year.
Glenn November 07, 2012 at 02:53 PM
No, we don't need an elected official to tell us whether it is safe or not. We need an elected official to make the simple decision to move Halloween to a better night as far as weather is concerned, so that children won't have to be denied participating in a once a year event.
Andrea Corcoran November 07, 2012 at 03:24 PM
The following is the response to an email that I sent requesting that the mayor reschedule Halloween for our children. Am I watching a different weather forecast than they are? Such a disappointment! "Mayor Harkins said he's very sorry that shifting the date of Halloween again is not possible.  He regrets any disappointment this may cause to children like your daughter.  We all know how fluid these weather situations can be.  We're crossing fingers that the rain holds off until well into tomorrow evening. I'm sorry I don't have better news for you.  Please be safe tomorrow evening and enjoy as much as possible."
susan chantlos November 07, 2012 at 03:29 PM
I wonder why its "not possible" ?? I love the way the Mayor doesn't respond himself, he has someone else relay his attitude. Of course its possible to "shift the date again". Other towns are doing it. Doesn't say much about him. You're right, this is a huge dissapointment. HE is a huge disappointment
Patricia Clark Sperling November 07, 2012 at 03:55 PM
WOOHOO! Let's move Halloween on our own if the Town won't do it for us!
Patricia Clark Sperling November 07, 2012 at 03:57 PM
It's not Mayor Harkins who is making the call here - it's his mouthpiece, Marc Dillon! We, as parents, need to reschedule it ourselves!

Stratford schools have just CANCELLED all evening activities, including late busses and adult education.
Chris Uhrynowski November 07, 2012 at 04:17 PM
I just heard that it has been moved to Sat night in Stratford
susan chantlos November 07, 2012 at 04:30 PM
Just posted on Mayor John Harkins official facebook page: Due to the impending storm, Halloween in Stratford has been moved to Saturday, Nov. 10.
michael lapuglia November 07, 2012 at 05:03 PM
i thank the mayor for doing the right thing...it is a great thing for our community to celebrate halloween and walk our neighborhoods and meet old and new neighbors never mind the income generated from decorations, candy, etc.....so kudos to the mayor for right decision and i look forward to seeing everyone in my neighborhood.
