School's Out Spelling Bee

In an effort to keep Stratford children busy as the start of school was pushed back to Sept. 6, Stratford Library has added two new programs to its schedule this week. Yesterday it was a book-covering program and today it's a spelling bee for children ages 6 to 12, which will start at 2:30 p.m.

Stratford Slowly Brightening

As of 12:25 a.m. Thursday, 11 percent of Stratford was without power, United Illuminating reported. At the peak of the power outages on Sunday, 39 percent of the town was in the dark. UI announced yesterday the goal of reducing the number of customers without power in the 17 towns and cities it serves to less than 10,000 by the weekend.

Champion Bird Carver

Stratford resident Hank Sprouse recently came in second in a worldwide bird carving championship. The retired dentist shared his story with Stratford Patch and the profile will be posted on the site later today. 

Beautiful Weather

Weather.com has forecast a high of 78 degrees today under mostly sunny skies. If you have time to spend a few daytime hours outside, check out one of these four town parks that Stratford Patch recently highlighted.

Believe it or not, August is gone and we are now in the final month of summer. September is recognized as being National Chicken Month, National Piano Month and, interestingly enough, Hug a Texas Chef Month.
