Coast Guard Officials Say Emergency Hoaxes Are Costly for Taxpayers

Officers at the U.S. Coast Guard station in New Haven said they receive numerous calls for emergency rescues and assistance every year, but many turn out to be hoaxes, such as .

An article by the New Haven Register said officials at the Coast Guard station said hoax calls cost taxpayers millions of dollars by unnecessarily deploying Coast Guard vessels and aircraft, and local police boats and fire department rescue boats.

A false report of a yacht explosion off New Jersey on Monday cost taxpayers an estimated $300,000. boats from Madison, Guilford, , Branford and West Haven responded to the false report last month.
