Bridgeport Democrats Expected to Fight for 23rd Senate District Nod

The seat now held by state Sen. Edwin Gomes represents a portion of Stratford.

A three-way Democratic Party contest is possible among Bridgeport politicians over the state senate’s 23rd District seat, which is currently held by , and also represents a portion of .

The Connecticut Post reported that state Rep. Andres Ayala, Jr., D-Bridgeport, and former state Sen. Ernest Newton II are planning to challenge Gomes for the party nomination.

The seat is controlled by Bridgeport Democrats, so winning the nomination is tantamount to winning the election. Only a relatively small part of the district is in Stratford, but it could be a factor in a tight contest.

Newton lost the seat when he was convicted in 2005 on a corruption charge, and Gomes then won it in a special election. Ayala announced his intention to run for it on Monday. Gomes recently had heart surgery and has not yet announced if he is a candidate.
