A brewmeister with a national reputation has been hired away from a Long Island brewery by the Two Roads Brewing Company, which plans to open in in September .
Newsday columnist James Bernstein this week said that Phil Markowski had developed a "near cult following" while serving as brewmeister at Southhampton Publick House, winning numerous awards including gold medals at the brewing industry’s prestigious Great American Beer Festival competition.
The state awarded a $500,000 grant to Two Roads Brewing earlier this year to help pay for brownfield environmental remediation at the old U.S. Baird site at 1700 Stratford Avenue. The brewery is expected to create 15 jobs this year and up to 70 jobs eventually.
