Audubon Magazine Reviews Issues on Long Beach West

How should the future of Long Beach West balance birds and humans?

An article in the March/April issue of the magazine for the National Audubon Society discusses the tug-of-war over the future of Long Beach West, Stratford's portion of the Pleasure Beach island that straddles the Bridgeport city border.

on the side to permit people to walk out on Long Beach West without disturbing the nests of piping plovers, a threatened shore bird, recently erupted when a blue ribbon commission included it in its recommendations for the future use of the beach property.

According to a Stratford Patch poll attached to , the majority of residents are not in favor of the construction of a boardwalk on the barrier beach. Out of total 207 votes, 130 or 62 percent voted against the recommendation, which is now in the hands of Mayor John A. Harkins.
