Notre Dame West Haven students help Sterling House and other local charities on Student Service Day.

The was happy to welcome student volunteers from Notre Dame High School in West Haven earlier this month. This year, Notre Dame students helped Sterling House sand down and smooth over the wooden playground to eliminate splinters and rough edges.

Several students braved a cold day while sanding the playground.

"Although it was a cold day and our job seemed minuscule, my group and I were able to complete it and realize it's impact," said Rachel Riatt, a senior at Notre Dame. "It was a very rewarding feeling to know that my service would benefit the children within the school and in the surrounding community."

In addition, volunteering provides a great career and academic opportunity for high school students pursing college degrees or workplace experience. According to the College View, many colleges and universities offer scholarships and grants for students who have a record of volunteer experience, and this can be used to offset any shortcomings in GPA or test scores.

Students from Notre Dame are encouraged to engage in community service and help many regional charities and nonprofits. Every year underclassmen participate in Student Service Day.
