Social Media and What it means for Business

Having been in the social media arena for more than five years, I have seen products and trends come and go and I am here to tell you that social media is here to stay. It is bringing people and businesses together in ways we haven’t seen. Social media is helping to craft the future of innovation. Whether it’s happening on MySpace or Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest, or on any of the other social media sites, I can say with certainty social media will remain part of how we do business.

Here are some ways social media is impacting business:

1.       Togetherness: Social media has brought businesses together in ways we have never seen. Small companies and entrepreneurs are having conversations with big companies. Big companies are looking to entrepreneurs for ideas and trends in the marketplace. I am curious to see where all of this innovation and idea sharing will lead. For now, I am enjoying the ride!

2.       Sharing is Caring: Rather than competing with each other, we’re sharing information about trends in our industries and ideas for past and future development. When done the right way, social media brings businesses together for a greater cause or for the greater good of both enterprises.

3.       A little bit country and a little bit rock and roll: For all of the collaborating that is happening, I am afraid there is still a great divide between how entrepreneurs and corporations do business. Entrepreneurs tend to not have the red tape of their corporate counterparts. Corporate entities have more money and backing to do bigger projects. While I think we’re trending more toward collaboration, there are still challenges ahead.
