Social Media Overview

As a business owner you are managing a variety of tasks and roles so it is important to understand the best social media for your business.

We wish we could tell you there's a magic formula for increasing engagement on social media but there is not. The biggest factor is consistency of posts followed closely by the content you are sharing. As a business owner you are managing a variety of tasks and roles so it is important to understand the best social media for your business.

It may appear you need all platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, etc.) -- there is some element of truth to that. Google loves social media, especially their own Google+. There is also targeted marketing -- your audience or target client -- to consider as well as establishing you and/or your brand as the expert in your field.

Here are some basics about your options:

Facebook: Where a website ends, Facebook begins. Today's websites are evolving into simple and informational and a link to social media. Facebook is the most common of these platforms and provides a way for brands to talk to their customers and prospective customers.

LinkedIn: If you're conducting B2B transactions, this is THE social media for your business. Insurance, investment and other professionals connect with clients and prospective clients through LinkedIn Groups. You can ask and answer questions and share interesting articles and information establishing you and/or your brand as the expert.

Twitter: Because Twitter is an open forum it is a powerful tool for business. Open forum means you can follow and be followed by anyone on Twitter. Whether it's your local politician, movie star or dream client, you can be connected easily.

Pinterest: Over the last few months this online cork board has been gaining in popularity for brands. They have realized it's not just a place for people to put their crafts or other non-business pictures. Pinterest is a place for brands to get noticed online. Create boards for each of your areas of expertise and link to your website, blog and other social media. Include a picture in blog posts and pin to your Blog Post board and you've got another audience!
