Meet the Brewers at Two Roads

Two Roads hosted the first of what I hope will be many of their "Meet the Brewers" events. This one featured the guys at Two Roads. You know, those adorable and hardworking fellows who make all that beerific magic happen.

How do you tell who the head brewer is at Two Roads? He's the one without the furry face. I could be wrong, but my impression of Phil Markowski is that he marches to the beat of his own drum. Perhaps this is why he bucks the brewer's beard trend.

Phil was kind enough to chat with me. I asked him what his favorite Two Roads beer was. I don't know if he was being diplomatic or simply honest, but his response was, "Whatever is in front of me." I could take that to mean the pitcher of Anniversary Ale that was sitting before him, but I'm pretty sure he was speaking in general terms.

He went on to say that, although he doesn't really have a favorite beer style, he tends to lean towards Pale Ales, Pilsners, and IPAs.

His favorite style to brew? Sours. Why? Because brewing them is challenging and somewhat unpredictable. The same recipe can vary from batch to batch.  Incidentally, Two Roads will be releasing their very own sour on April 5th! I can't wait to try it!

When I went to talk with Roger, who also has that scruff of brewer's fur, he had mosied off to brew some beer, clean a tank, or some such thing.

I did catch up with him briefly and just had to ask about the beard thing. He said he didn't know why so many brewers sport a scruff of whiskers. He told me the reason he does is because is was in the military for several years. He had to be clean shaven and high & tight for so long he just had to let it fly and be free. (That's not a direct quote). I thanked him for his service and let him get back to his work.

Andrew, yet another fur bearing critter, is a self acclaimed "hop boy". We discussed several different hop varieties and he is, indeed, a wealth of hopilicious information. His claim to fame is that it was his suggestion to barrel age Roadsmary's Baby; a good call if you ask me. His favorite Two Roads beer is Route of All Evil.

John is the assistant brewer and has also succumbed to the beer guy fuzzy face look. It works for him.  No offense intended to Phil, but John is the creator of my two favorite Two Roads beers - Henry's Farm and Anniversary Ale. His personal Two Roads favorites are Henry's Farm and Ol’ Factory Pils. His favorite style of beer is IPA, his favorite non-Two Roads beer is Stone IPA.

I admit these weren't the most in depth interviews, I probably need to bone up on my interviewing skills. But, still, it was nice chatting with the boys and learning a something new about them and the beer they brew.
