Readers' Choice: Stratford Preschools

Tell us why you love your preschool -- through a poll vote, rating and review -- and help spread awareness of all the great options in town in this week's Readers' Choice installment.

It's one of the early formal choices that parents make that involves education and separation from a child for regular, extended periods of time: Preschool.

We understand that practical considerations of availability, money and location figure largely into decisions about which preschool parents choose for their children.

Since so much careful research -- in person, online and through word of mouth -- goes into the preschool decision, we want to poll our Stratford parents not just on what they feel is the best preschool for their child, but also why.

Below is a list of preschools we have registered in our continuously updated Stratford Patch Places Directory. Click on any of them to get to a page dedicated to that preschool and to rate and review it.

Please also tell us in the comment thread which preschools are missing from the list and why they're the best -- we'll add them to the poll and create a new Patch Places listing for them. If you're a preschool operator who doesn't see your listing on Stratford Patch, email me at jason.bagley@patch.com or if you want to .

Here's our starter list:

  • Stratford Baptist Preschool

Voting in the poll below is open until 9 a.m. Friday. We will announce the winner at 12 p.m. Friday.

The poll part isn't scientific so it's not the sole determinant of a Readers' Choice winner. We will determine the winner based on a point system in which poll results and ratings are considered equally. Only the top 3 finishers will receive points. In the event of a tie, we will determine the winner based on which business has the highest combined number of positive comments and positive reviews on its directory listings.

Sterling House preschool is lots of fun and a great school. My oldest daughter went for two years and is now in kindergarten at the top of her class. My youngest is in her first year of preschool and loves it! She is excited to play with friends, create and learn. It has been a positive first school experience for both children and has set them up for a love of learning.

My daughter is enrolled at Sterling House Preschool & loves it. My son also attended & loved it as well. The teachers there are wonderful & caring. The curriculum is stimulating & fun for the children . They are NAYEC accredited! They both also branch off into the other wonderful programs offered by the Sterling House (ie summer camp & soccer) which is great to be able to know the staff already & know that your children are being well cared for no matter what activity they are involved in. I HIGHLY recommend Sterling House Preschool!!

My great grand daughter went to Sterling House preschool for two years prior to kindergarten . It really helped prepare her for kindergarten and she loved the interaction with the other children. Now her sister attends Sterling House and today she read a word to me! Soon my great grandson will go there as well! And then maybe the baby. We think it's a great place. I highly recommend Miss Priscilla who works wonders with the children!

Sterling House Preschool is amazing. All four of my children went there for 3 and 4 year old preschool as well as their Toddler Time program. They have a dedicated staff that truly care about their children. They prepare the children in kindergarten readiness, social skills, and self-direction skills. They celebrate each child's individuality and boost their self-esteem. I highly recommend this school! :)

Stratford United Methodist Preschool is a fantastic preschool! I have three children who have all attended this school and they have all enjoyed it. The staff is warm and caring and go out of their way to make the nervous 3 year olds comfortable leaving their parents side for the first time. They teach the children the fundamentals they will need for kindergarten in fun and creative ways. I will miss this school and all the staff when my youngest moves on to kindergarten.

My child attends Briarfield Day School. We love the school, the staff, and the families. My son is excited to get to school everyday and misses his teachers and friends on weekends. He has learned so much in the two years he has been at the school and continues to astonish me everyday with what he has learned. He will be going off to Kindergarten soon but we will never forget our Briarfield family. We have used the staff as babysitters and love all his teachers. We are so thankful that we chose Briarfield for our son.

I highly recommend Stratford YMCA Presool which is NAEYC accredited. My granddaughter really enjoys herself when she is at school. Her teachers make learning fun and she is so excited about what she learned at school. The teachers are truly amazing and I am very happy that her parents chose to send her to Stratford YMCA Preschool.

My vote is for Briarfield Day School. My daughter has loved going to this school from the minute I brought her to tour it the first day. The staff is wonderful and truly cares for your child as if they were one of their own. The things she has learned since starting preschool have done nothing less than keep me speechless. I am proud to say that my child goes to Briarfield Day School! Keep up the good work!

My granddaughter goes to Briarfield Day School and really loves it. She has learned so much since she started 3 months ago. Teachers are great and really interact well with the kids. Never any tears when she is dropped off and jumps right in when she arrives. Awesome school. Briarfield gets my vote!

In Mrs. Cornish 1st year, I raised issues @ BUDGET HEARING that CLASS ROOMS & STAFF existed for 100 % availability for ALL DAY KINDERGARTEN, instead of a LOTTERY for 60-70%. - That BUDGET was ADJUSTED and ALL DAY KINDERGARTEN happened to become 100 % available. - Same Budget Hearing Forum, I pointed out: $ 60,000 annually to JAIL someone $ 11,000 annually to educate someone Which is more humane, intelligent, & cost effective? - Same Budget Hearing Forum, I pointed out: State & FEDS pay 25 % of BoE Budget. Mayor Mirons contention relative to collected taxes were a lie. - I was also a critic of prior Superintendent building an empire of overpriced and redundant management. Mrs. Cornish for 2 years reduced managment staffing & cost. However, it now appears to have been replacing "his" with "ours?" - A couple years ago, during BoE presentation to mostly Teachers, Mrs. Cornish pointed out TOP LEVEL PAY for the 60% of Teachers in that LEVEL was $88,000-$ 93,000. (USA upper class is considerer over $ 68,000) - Education always claims KIDS FIRST. However Public schools are about JOBS, PAY, and BENEFITS of the POLITICAL CLASS(less) who weasel their ways into systemic control. > NOT A MAJORITY!! > HOWEVER the POLITICAL PARTIES feed off the people & business and BOARD of ED has about twice the number of Employees - SCAM related to HEALTH CARE = I believe KICK BACKS > Family plan for BOE + TOWN cost TAX PAYERS $ 22,500 per family plan. - GET INVOLVED?
Tom March 22, 2012 at 04:12 PM
The machine of BIG EDUCATION is just around the corner George. Soon all of this will be a moot issue because the average tax payer in the town will be so far removed from the financial empire that will control the boards of these school that decision making will be reduced to two simple choices: do I pay my property taxes or not? The machine will give us few positive results, will burden us even further with unfunded mandates, and will pollute our schools with interloping teachers who will stop in from anywhere in the country and use the opportunity as a way of paying off their bloated college debts. When we think of the machine we should picture it as if it were a large PAC-MAN just gobbling up the tiny little dots that were once our local schools. Open your mouths people!

So George and Tom, which pre-schools are you voting for?
Bob G March 22, 2012 at 05:38 PM
Helen King Reynolds, NAEYC accredited with great teacher to student ratios. Not the biggest in Stratford, just the best.
Brandy March 22, 2012 at 08:08 PM

I love the Stratford YMCA NAEYC-accredited preschool - my son flourished under the caring attention he received there and his love for school is still strong. The staff is great and the swimming lessons are a unique bonus.

Briarfield gets my vote. I visited several schools before choosing Briarfield for my 2 children. The staff are nurturing and loving and my children learn so much at Briarfield. The directors are always right on hand to talk to about concerns or for advice. I'm so thankful for all the love and care they show my children.

St. Marks has my vote! My son went there and I could not have been more pleased. The teachers give them such a great learning experience. From learning Spanish, to developing the skills to learn how to read....they cover it all.
Kip Steele March 23, 2012 at 12:52 PM
Fantastic school
Kip Steele March 23, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Helen king Reynolds by far. We looked at the other schools in town and this was perfect for our son based upon class size, accreditation, and education of the teaching staff. Simply the best and could not be happier with the way that they have worked with our son.
