Connecticut Unemployment Back to 9 Percent

Job growth appears to be slowing and wages are on the decline.

The October unemployment rate increased a tenth of a percent to 9 percent, according to the latest figures from the Connecticut Department of Labor.

One survey showed that 1,200 jobs were added in the previous month despite the uptick in the unemployment rate.

"With October's results we are, for the first time, showing year-over-year declines in job levels," said Andy Condon, director of the Department of Labor's Office of Research. "However, we believe that when we complete our annual benchmark revisions in March, we will be showing as many as 8,000 to 9,000 more jobs in the state than the payroll survey currently indicates. If so, the current year-over-year declines will no longer hold."

The state's unemployment rate peaked at 9 percent twice this year. Before July 2012, the previous time unemployment was at 9 percent was April 2011.

In a written statement, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy stressed the severity of the recession that slumped the economy.

"Though not as severe this month as in previous months, the household and business surveys are once again pointing in opposite directions," Malloy said. "On the one hand, we created 1,200 jobs this month. But on the other, our overall unemployment rate increased slightly. If these conflicting results tell any single story, it's that more people are attempting to enter the workforce because conditions are beginning to improve."

The survey shows that the average workweek droped from 34.4 hours in 2011 to 34 hours in October. Average hourly earnings dropped 54 cents to $27.93 in a year.

Even that number is fraudulent. The real figure is probably about 25%. Add the 9% reported to the 9% who have given up looking to the 7% whose unemployment benefits have run out and are not counted as "human beings looking for work". All I'm saying is let's be realistic about how bad the situation really is.

Malloy said today - for Connecticut to be competitive we need a new gas pipeline for cheaper energy. This moron thinks cheaper energy is the economic problem. It's the economy stupid. No jobs. No businesses. Empty strip malls. Empty factories. High taxes. Over Regulation. Public Service Employees with generous salary, benefits, pensions, longevity pay & NO ACCOUNTABILITY. If Malloy worked in private industry - he'd be canned.

For as many of my friends and I who have just landed jobs (part time- because our companies don't want to pay benifits) I have recently heard of just as many who just got laid off this past month. Companies in CT are still going out of business. And I have never gotten anywhere near the "average of $27.93" hourly earnings. Take everything in surveys with a grain of salt.

No1st, It's only going to get worse, He has 2 more years and he will get us deeper and deeper in debt. This guy has no clue. There are 30 Republican Goverors in the United States and all those states are doing well, Something is wrong with this picture. He will be gone in 2 years unless the people who put him there vote him in again. which is highly likely, because you know Democrats they love FREE STUFF. Wake up people.

I don't know what Malloy means by this, "pipeline" business. It’s time to move on and stop depending on energy sources coming from the ground – they will run out soon enough. Let's not forget that the ruined economy started with Ronald Reagan. Alabama, New Jersey (before Sandy), Alaska, Florida, Nevada, Arizona (papers please) - shall I keep going? Their economies are drowning and they have Republican governors. You’ve been misinformed. So why blame current governors for this epidemic of job loss, failing businesses. Know too that if our banks were regulated, they wouldn’t have crashed in 08. It’s not all right with me that banking CEO’s were getting away with spending my mortgage payments on private jets, cocaine and other luxuries. It’s also not all right with me that energy companies don’t think that they are responsible for cleaning up the pollution that they create – dirty water and dirty air that kills us.

The ruined economy started with that peanut farmer, who didn't know anything about the economy. This governor is not doing his job and will be replaced in two years. He can only govern by raising taxes and spending us into oblivian, Is that what you want for yourself and your family? We need fiscal clarity to create jobs ,growth and prosperity,Governor. You are driving us off the cliff in Connecticut.

You need to check your history about when the economy actually started to fail, and who was responsible. Jimmy Carter placed solar panels on the White House and Ronald Reagan removed them. It was one of his first acts as President, symbolic and indicative of the “Great Energy Empowerment Era” that has been going on since. Look at the damage that these powerful energy companies have done to the economy/environment, with record-breaking profits and plenty of pollution. It’s time to replace them with better energy sources that would bring lots of new jobs. Romney was lying about the lack of jobs created by green energy. His lack of getting the facts straight cost him the election. I worked steadily during the Johnson, Carter, Clinton and Obama Administrations. I’ve suffered unemployment with Republicans in the White House; every one of them. I don’t like the pipeline idea and I will let Malloy know. You could do the same. I have no reason to defend him, even though I voted for him. Liberals are funny like that. We’re not big on the whole lockstep thing. We ask questions of everybody. Also and before you cut him to shreds about taxes, remember that he inherited the Rowland-Rell mess

Seriously, who the hell did they survey to get that "average wage"??
Bob Cerani November 25, 2012 at 02:13 PM
That is right, because they did not work.Only Democrats would think of stupid ideas that waste tax payer money. The same thing with wind farms. anyone who thinks you can run the United States on wind farms are CRAZY.It will never happen. The only thing I can tell you Ms. Shea is what goes around comes around, You Democrats are on a pretty big high right now, but don't let that head swell to much, you are headed for a fall in the coming years with Obama at the helm. You can't have one party rule, his first 2 years proved that, unless you prefer a Dictatorship. The people knowledgable enough, won't allow it. This is why you have checks and balances, Are you following me yet. As for Malloy this guy is going to take us off the cliff by what he is doing to Connecticut. The projected deficit by july of 2013 will be 1.6 million. So you can be sure taxes will go up again. and as to your funny remark about Liberals not being in lock step, that is so true because history shows that Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini were not in lock step either and they were Liberals,Progressives and Socialists also. And as you will see in the future Obama is taking the same coarse. Good luck with your party Ms. Shea. We are all going to fall because of him.

ENERGY AND FISCAL CLIFF: Mr. Cerani, where did you get that ridiculous piece of info – Rush Limbaugh, or Exxon Mobil? Solar panels are enormously helpful...a nightmare for energy companies. Energy sources from the ground are limited, especially oil. We don’t have to fight one war after another over wind and sun. They would be expensive to implement, but boundless. We should have listened to that, “peanut farmer.” Other progressive countries have caught on –they laugh at us. Maybe you’re just sore at Carter because it was his grandson that introduced the famous, "47% Romney Video" to a shocked Country. If you are so worried about this whole, “fiscal cliff” business, get busy emailing the Republicans in Congress. They need to start acting like adults and learn how to compromise.

THE GREART DICTATOR: Hitler was a Nazi, Mussolini was a Fascist. (really right wing stuff there) Stalin was a Communist. (as leftist as a Socialist can get) He didn’t like them, especially when Adolph invaded his Country, so I don’t get your point. Maybe it has something to do with Obama becoming a dictator? Yes, checks and balances are a great thing. I take that back – George W. Bush certainly tried his hand at dictatorship. Obama can’t even get past Baynor and McConnell – who did not even have the good manners to take his phone calls after the election. We don’t have time for swell heads. (must be a conservative thing) We’re still mending the George Bush mess – you know, that deficit that he pushed up into the trillions. Were you worried then? Clinton left us with a surplus. Now, Mr. Cerani – you must explain to me in detail how, “Dictator Obama” is leading us to ruin. I’m sure it will be priceless
Bob Cerani November 26, 2012 at 02:59 AM
I would not even be able to tell you Ms.smarty pants know it all. From your bird brained analysis as a Democrat, who has blinders on ,and can't see the forest for the trees, gee I guess you did not know that Obama is a Socialist, and his father was a Communist .You only want to hear what you want because you still have that tingle up your leg yet. Obama is a dictator get that straight. You are to gullable and wet behind the ears yet to understand what this all means, but you will really grow up when all this stuff starts hitting the fan missy. Oh by the way, Conservative not, Independent, and proud of it. I am an Independent thinker not a follower like you are stuck in old style democrat talking points of 50 years ago. Now getting back to the big O. Do you know what is in this obamacare bill? I didn't think so. Well if you have a house to sell you will be taxed on how much your house is worth, and that can total up to $8,000 to $10,000 dollars and when you buy another house you will have to pay the same amout again. Now why is this in a healthcare bill? you tell me.That's the lying and underhandedness of of Mr. Obama to pay for this albatross. Nice guy, glad he isn't my president. So before you speak about anything please get your facts straight, Like I said, you are so enamoured with this president that he can take everything away from you and you will say ok, I love you mr. president. Oh and the correct spelling is Boehner. Another reason to dislike democrats. Give me a break.
Roberta Shea November 26, 2012 at 03:55 AM
FROM THE BIRD BRAIN: So far, the only thing that you are right about is that I spelled the Speaker’s name wrong. Inexcusable – even though I have little respect for the man. Name-calling, Mr. Cerati is childish. (Obama is a Communist, his father was a... whatever and I am a ‘Ms. Smarty-Pants’ with a bird brain) Instead of treating me like a silly schoolgirl with a crush on Obama, give me some good reasons why you don’t like his policies. Or is it something about him personally – let’s see, what could it be???? You accuse me of wearing blinders, yet everything you say is straight from the Republican Media Propaganda Memos. (yes – I’ve read the emails) I hear the same crap on FOX NOISE - verbatim. Yet, you call yourself independent. It is not my job to defend the President of the United States. You might consider learning more about his policies before you criticize him. That would be much more responsible. Deal with it – he is the President. You think you know me. Don’t you dare even presume to tell me who I am and what I think! I see that it is impossible to have an exchange of ideas with you. You are too angry and very petty. How could I take you seriously?
Baffled Resident November 26, 2012 at 07:37 AM
LOL@fools that criticize someone for not spelling a politician's name correctly. I guess you're just "to<sic>gullable<sic> and enamoured"<sic> Roberta. BTW, spell check software is free, Mr. Cerani.
