Playing to the beat of your own drummer

Recently, Bunnell High Marching Band & Guard (www.bunnellband.org) played host to the 2011 Southwest Conference Championships & New England Open USSBA Winter Guard & Drum Line Show at the High School (www.stratfordk12.org).

About 15 schools competed in the championships. Bunnell’s entry was a rock number called “Ritual” by YES.

Bunnell High Marching Band leader, Samantha Carroll, a junior who plays the vibraphone, thought it was “fun having (the competition at) your own school.”  According to her, the group of 40 kids works “really hard.”   They practice twice a week, for three hours on Thursdays and as much as they can on Saturdays.   “We’re all goofy, but we come together and make something great.”

The Bunnell Marching Band, directed by James Miller, has been state champions nine times, as well as having played in the Citrus Bowl, Hollywood Christmas Parade and Tournament of Roses Parade.[3]

Drum Instructor for 18 years, Joe Gaudett, has been teaching kids to work as a team while making music and staying focused.  It makes his regular job easier.   He’s also the Bridgeport Police Chief.   “It keeps them off the street,” he said.

For Daniella Nava who plays the Marimba with Macy Corica it’s about being attuned to each other.    “We get together out of school.   We have a bond.”
