What Do I Do With My Pet During A Weather Emergency?

While Milford emergency shelters are able to accommodate pets, here's a list of other options for your four-legged friends if you have to leave your home and you're not going to the public shelter.

When your family members include the four-legged variety and there's a storm headed our way, thoughts naturally turn to how to keep pets safe.

Woodbury, CT Fire Chief Janet Morgan said because Hurricane Sandy is not a subdegree zero storm, she advises the following.

"It's really best if pets can stay in the home rather than be in a cage at an unfamiliar location with animals they don't know," she said.

What horrible advice for the fire chief to give! Of course many pets get scared being in unfamiliar locations but this is predicted to be a dangerous storm. What if there is flooding or you leave your home and the roads are closed for a week and you are unable to get back to your pets to feed them? Should rescue workers and residents then risk their lives going back to the home? If you are evacuating b/c you feel your home is unsafe then your pets are in danger too!
