Potholes: Where are They?

Today is the first day of spring, which means it's pothole season -- post here to let Public Works know where the worst are in your neighborhood.

Despite the fact that we had a virtually snow-free winter, the town's streets have still taken a beating over the last few months and with spring comes pothole season.

Potholes appear when the pavement cracks, moisture builds up in the crack and then freezes and thaws. It's a problem that any town really can't avoid.

Potholes can be a year-long problem but are especially noticable in the spring after streets are plowed and sanded over the winter. While the areas for the most part escaped severe winter weather, there still are sections of roads that look like they've been chewed up and are in need of repair.

One such area, reported by a Stratford resident on SeeClickFix.com, is between 123 and 197 Surf Ave. 'HUGE POTHOLE' reads the complaint. On the website, the resident said the pothole destroyed the car's tire and rim.

What are some other problem areas? Do you have bad potholes in your neighborhood?

Post the locations in the comments section below and if you can, snap a picture and upload it here too (but be safe while taking pictures!). Public Works can't fix what they aren't aware of, so a running list of potholes can help them locate problem spots.

And Happy Spring!

Here's what people are saying about potholes -- and other PW requests -- on the Stratford Patch Facebook page: Matt DeBernardo: "come fix my sidewalk ! also, the fence near the playground in north ave is extremely dangerous. The bottoms are all bent out and upwards towards the sidewalk. I cut my leg and my pet almost lost her eye. This needs to be fixed." Diane Honafius Klansky: "any place to complain about the tree out front lol. i have been on public works list for about 6 years. last year when i called they said we are pulling your work order out now. that was last summer. lol. its needed trimming for all these years and now branches are on the power lines since hurricane Irene. I cant take it down because its considered town property. I will keep my eyes out for pot holes, hope the town can manage to get them fixed before 6 years lol" Jennie Blox: "North ave is awful!" Jim McGuire: "North Ave between Main and Nichols was paved in the fall."

Heather Galik: "North Ave, between Nichols and Broadbridge Ave. right next to The Corner Deli! They keep patching it and in a day or two it's a mess again!!! It's really bad!" Amy Breidenbach Zajac: "Corner of Andrew and Reitter there is a sinkhole by the sewer. The Town hasn't fixed it, but put a cone in it upside down. Very dangerous!" Michael Capodicci: "under 95 on surf ave, huge!" Jim Bavolacco: "Hathaway drive near at&t some real big pot holes there." Sheri Kline Tinguirlis: "at the end of Fairlea Avenue meeting Freeman....I also believe near mercer meeting freeman etc etc etc...." Doug Pregman: "The tree in front of our house split during the hurricane. Now half is hanging over house and dead! Come cut It!" Deanna L Cabral: "Lower part of Chapel Street going towards cutspring, always a pot hole and they never fix it right! Also north end park on wigwam, trees are a mess since hurricane, side by Preston Drive and they need to pave the damn parking area they made so the idiot teenagers stop peeling out :)" Grace Arpie: "West Broad near Cumberland Farms and Dunkin Donuts, near the light. It's HUGE." http://www.facebook.com/StratfordPatch

Windsor Avenue right off of Main Street is a mess. Previously patched potholes have opened up. It's a challenge to a car's shocks.

Klondike Street has numerous potholes that are in desperate need of repair.. We have lived here for 16 years and the street has never ben re-paved ..it is definately time! The sewer on the corner of Yukon and Klondike is also in need of repair. I have called the town department numerous times about it. The slightest amount or rainfall causes a huge puddle...making the pothole around it even worse.

Keep the pothole locales coming. At the end of the week I'll put them all together in a request to the Public Works department. If you have a camera handy, please feel free to snap a shot of the pothole and add it to the photo gallery above.

That's unfortunate. I'll see if a bug has been reported in uploading photos. Give it a few hours and try uploading again, would be my advice.

Housatonic Avenue from about 200 to about 440 has series of potholes. - Someone called/told me he was in construction. PW puts asphalt shavings at end of his dirt road, (upper part of hill). When it rains, shavings go down the hill & mess up around a driveway. He claimed if PW mixed small rocks with the shavings they would stay there 10 years and POT HOLE issues could be similarly solved? - Measure twice - cut once? I get so much disinformation - I don't know if this is true? - However if there are ways to make POT HOLE fillings last 2 to 10 times longer, it seems to SAVE: TIME, MONEY, SAFETY& good for RESIDENTS. - - March 12: head of CT DOT met Stratford Economic Development Commission. I handed him list of 7 places on Main Street of auto accidents in the last year, besides the flooding on both sides of the airport and surf avenue under I-95. - I also pointed out huge tree limbs over parts of upper nichols avenue = danger. - Also NO sidewalks next to Barnum Avenue RR Bridge over "99" + McDonalds by the movie Theater / Marshalls. - Also the ground water poisons being stirred up by DOT Moses Wheeler / # 33. - - Councilor Catalano had map of I-95 area. He and Councilor Santi asked for movement of ramps for Traffic purposes for Barnum Avenue / East Main? I see RAMPS increasing MAIN & ELM Traffic>AVCO. Use # 31=WIDE Boulevard! Fix 32S! Burgulars escape on Interstates - Mr. Catalano informed DOT Chair of crushed EPA WELLS=stirred poisons.

Jason, Thinking that we should get a #flashfixmob together along with the seeclickfix app and have people get these tracked into a system so that there can be some follow up and this can be monitored. The outpouring has been great so far.
Kip Steele March 23, 2012 at 03:47 PM
40 issues are logged here. If you get a list email it to me and I will file them into the system and then send a follow up to public works. https://apps.facebook.com/seeclickfix/?ref=ts
Jason Bagley (Editor) March 23, 2012 at 04:22 PM
Sounds good, Kip. I'll send you that list today/tomorrow. Have a good weekend.

Just want say thank you for putting this article up about pot holes. Within a couple days the town was out fixing Klondike Street. Special thanks to Marco, he seemed to take extra concern of our "problems". Marco is a very nice man and even came back this morning to make sure I was happy with the work he did! Thank you. 239.
