Nazi Flag Flies in Stratford

Homeowner says it's in protest of President Obama. Neighbors want it removed.

A Stratford man says the Nazi flag on his Connors Lane house is a political protest against President Barack Obama and he's not taking it down until the president changes policy, resigns or gets impeached.

"It's in competition with the American flag (next to it)," says Joseph Sincavage, who adds that he's not a skinhead and doesn't associate at all with neo-Nazis.

The 74-year-old Stratford man says unlike the presidents before Obama who defended the constitution, our current president has worked around it or broken it. He cites events such as the Benghazi tragedy, the controversy circling the IRS and gay marriage.

"He doesn't call terrorism by what it really is," he says.

Sincavage, a former U.S. Marine, put the flag up over the weekend. It took the place of a Confederate one. Tara Wexler, who lives around the corner, says she first saw it Wednesday.

"I was horrified," Wexler says. "Everyone (in the neighborhood) is clearly disgusted and unhappy about it."

Wexler says while she respects a person's right to freedom of speech, "showing such a horrible symbol of hate" is unacceptable.

Wexler, who is a member of the PTA at nearby Second Hill Lane, says she doesn't want her kid learning about Nazi Germany by seeing its flag in her community.

You are stupid, stupid little man, Joseph Sincavage. Anyone defending this had better rethink what you're saying right here and now - looks like Nick C here agrees with this form of protest - that's some sick partisanship, dude, when you support someone PUBLICLY who is flying a Nazi flag. You might be a confused as he is.... Go to Hell Joe SINcavage - don't try to tell us it's a protest, you Nazi pig. You and your buddies better have enough ammo to hold off the vigilante mob when we come over there, rip down your flag, put you a rail and run you out of town, you confused stupid little man.

I live very close to Mr. Sincavage and pass the house daily and often with my 6-year old son, who is half Jewish and has proud Jewish grandparents . While, I think it is VERY important for him to know all he can about history and his family's personal history, I don't feel that I need to explain to him at 6-years old why our neighbor hangs pure hatred and a symbol of evil on the front of his house. That house on Connors Lane is a black spot on our town!

Now that's just not nice Common Sense Moderate. Sounds like a threat.... the NSA knows...

I'm not trying to be nice.
Common Sense Moderate June 27, 2013 at 10:23 AM
Ok, instead of a mob, perhaps we should try democracy and pass a town ordinance outlawing the Nazi Flag within the limits of our town... maybe outlaw the Confederate Flag while we're at it.
Fritz Lugnutz June 27, 2013 at 10:28 AM
Whats the point? adding more and more restrictions to our freedom of speech, sounds like a winner. Have an intelligent conversation with the man and understand where he is coming from.
Dominic Lagonigro June 27, 2013 at 10:28 AM
SOunds like a great idea Common Sense. There are talks of a peaceful protest to be organized this weekend. Will kepp people posted here

This same clown previously flew a confederate flag too...nothing but a scrawny, old, racist.

Sincavage's Nazi & Confederate flags, both indicative of vicious human rights atrocities, is the disturbing visual of a very sick part of our political discourse in this country. Those people who support this idiot's POV as his right against what they apparently deem as a shredder of their Constitutional rights in this Democratic, African American President, are the same people who no doubt deliriously wrapped themselves in their American flags as GWBush actually DID gut our Constitutional rights with the ironically named Patriot Act. And Bush did this while the country reeled after 9/11. For the record, 9/11 was a terrorist attack GWB was warned about and did nothing - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING - to thwart. I'm sick of these idiots flaunting their 'right' to flagrantly disrespect our country and this President without due cause. NSA complaints should focus where the problem now being discussed began: the Patriot Act. The IRS 'scandal' pursuing a WH connection has crashed and burned. The person in charge at the IRS was none other than a Bush appointee, and NEWSFLASH! the 'targeted' groups included Progressives and Occupiers. Benghazi was tragic, but Bush oversaw nearly 60 similar deaths in terrorist attacks at least 11 Consulate and diplomatic posts and not so much as a peep from the 'patriots' in our midst at that time. Instead, these same 'patriots' shrieked over criticism of Bush's alarming [proven and documented] policy of lies to invade Iraq and his subsequent approval of illegal torture. They claimed at that time that the justified outcries of war crimes undermined our country and leadership in a time of war. Now listen to these 'patriots' like Mr. Sincavage turn tail and howl against the country and leadership, in a time of war that Bush started.

Take a good look at this little man with his flags, folks. This is the face of what now passes for a Fox News-informed 'dissenter'.
Rose B June 27, 2013 at 10:47 AM
@fritzlugnutz: I dare you to find an "intelligent conversation" anywhere in this guy. And, we know where he's coming from -- it's right there on the front of his house.
Fritz Lugnutz June 27, 2013 at 10:52 AM
You people have too much time on your hands.... GET BACK TO WORK!

No frozen way, Fritz. You cannot have intelligent conversations with people who are not intelligent. This man is NOT intelligent, which is abundantly clear simply from his form of protest; and I will NOT have a conversation with someone who is this confused and perverted. I'm not a democrat and not a defender or Obama or progressive politics in general, but I am a defender of common sense, and I don't CARE where he's coming from when this is how he expresses his worthless, under-educated opinions. Fook his flag and fook him too.
Fritz Lugnutz June 27, 2013 at 11:00 AM
Keep calm and carry on Stratford, there are far more pressing issues to deal with.

He's clearly a dirty old biggot! Hiding behind political excuses.

As a former Stfd resident now living in SC, I read this story on the net. I am a US Marine combat veteran from Vietnam I do respect everyones right to free speech but showing a symbol of hatred and mass killing is not the way to do it. While many of us in this country disagree with the President and the way he does things, the display of a Nazi flag is just plain wrong. You sir are asking for more trouble then you think. Think back in history about what that flag means, the Jews that were murdered, the hatred that goes with it. IT IS JUST WRONG AND A DISGRACE!!!!!!
Concerned Resident June 27, 2013 at 12:27 PM
As a concerned resident I encourage other residents to call Joseph Sincavage of 546 Connors Ln, Stratford, CT 06614 @ 203-377-8453 and voice their concern.

He's just following orders from his god, Rush.

Hey Everyone...Get the picture! FREE SPEECH ends where HATE SPEECH BEGINS. This fool is obviuosly pleased with the attention he is getting. I think I may call National Geographic to report the sighting of a previuosly thought extinct Primate known to have survived with a Walnut sized brain via dumb luck till it ran out... And based on some of the dumb comments here, there may be a colony of them sprinkled thoughout Stratford and beyond, ie; Nick (WIT) "COUSINS" and others. But Forrest Gumps Mama always said "Stupid is as studid does"! Sho Nuff as evolution is my witness! EVOLVE or become extinct. Sincovtch is a throwback tosser whos feeble mind is fading...none too soon.
Robyn Greenspan June 27, 2013 at 01:47 PM
The flags were gone last and were not flying this morning. Either he didn't appreciate the negative attention or the removal was temporary.

I worry that there is something about Stratford that breeds this behaviour....remember the Ct White Wolves of a few years ago. Notwithstanding other issues with this, home values go straight down the drain with these types of repeated incidents....just when we were seeing some much needed recovery.

The man has the right to vent his feelings. Obama has done more to destroy the working middle class then the republicans have in the last 30 years.
Common Sense Moderate June 30, 2013 at 12:13 PM
A right to vent feelings, absolutely, and even the legal right to fly the flag. But if you want to use that symbol as your protest, than you will hear the fury of the common sense majority. Complain about petty partisan issues all you want. Many of us are not democrats or republicans - but Americans with little interest in your partisan warfare - 95% of us (hopefully more) disgusted with him. He can exercise his rights - and we'll exercise ours. And if this is your way of protesting/venting feelings of discontent against the current government - than you must be confused about how the Federal Republic you live in is supposed to work. Talk to your elected leaders at various levels of government (town/regional/state/federal), and if you don't like them, try to get people you do like in office. But offending your neighbors and all common decency in the name of protest just means you're a bad citizen.
yankee July 01, 2013 at 02:24 PM
Have some people become so partisan and lost so much of their humanity that if someone shares their anti Obama sentiment, they will agree with the most insane and ugly things these people say or do? Go talk to your religious leader and ask for guidance.
Stephanie Oda July 01, 2013 at 10:13 PM
Does this ignorant old racist want a government like Nazi Germany? His flying that evil flag is offensive to the millions who died under Hitler. ( He should read "Night," Eli Weisel"s memoir of the concentrations camps--if he can read). He offends the memory of those who were packed into cattle cars and killed just for being who they were; he offends the memory of the soldiers who fought and died to stop that brutal, vicious insane regime--our American forces, without whom World War II would not be won; the people who died in the London blitz, my three uncles, who fought with the British, my father, who worked as a laborer building bomb shelters in London, the precious, innocent children burned alive in Hitler's death factories, and even the Germans themselves who froze to death at the Russian front because of that Hitler's brutality and megalomania. Having to look at that flag is an offense to so many that there should be a law against flying it. The First Amendment ends where my ears and eyes begin. Flying a Nazi flag is tantamount to committing a hate crime. How dare he? I have news for Sincavage: Times they are a-changing. We have a black man in the white house; gay marriage is legal; even Texas can't overturn Roe vs. Wade, and in about 70 years time, white Americans like you and me will be a minority. Live with it, old man.
