Homes, Road Proposed on Stratford Wetlands

A proposal to construct several homes and a new road in marsh wetlands around Sikorsky Memorial Airport has reportedly drawn the dissent of some Stratford residents who live nearby as well as the town’s planning and zoning administrator.

The Connecticut Post reports that only three of the proposed 11 homes would be in compliance with a town zoning regulation that protects known wetlands.

The applicants, Misty Blue LLC and 117 Grove Street LLC, are seeking a variance “to waive the 75-foot setback from tidal wetlands for Lots 4 through 11 and the proposed road to setbacks ranging from 13.6 feet and 58.6 feet,” according to the July 2 agenda of the Stratford Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA).

In a letter to the board, Stratford planning and zoning administrator Gary Lorentsen said the 75-foot barrier is essential to the protection of the wetlands and the plan as it stands would go against both local and state environmental policy, the Post reported.

One Grove Street resident interviewed by the Post said that most of her neighbors are against the proposed development for reasons that included added noise from the airport as a line of trees would need to be cut down.

The proposal is on the ZBA’s agenda for Sept. 3, according to the newspaper.
