The Watermark Hosts Parkinson's Support Group; Expands Parkinson's Fitness Class

On Thursday, January 9, The Watermark at 3030 Park will host its monthly Parkinson’s Support Group meeting, along with its newly expanded Parkinson’s Fitness Class. The support group will be held at 10:00 a.m. and starting Tuesday, January 7, fitness classes will now be held every Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. and every Thursday at noon at the retirement community, located at 3030 Park Avenue on the Bridgeport-Fairfield town line.

The guest speaker for January’s support group will be Linda Cammarota, RN Liason from Vitas Innovative Hospice Care. Cammarota will discuss ways that older adults can help prevent injury-inducing falls. She will talk about risk factors that cause falls, and strategies that adults can use in their everyday life to help practice and maintain better balance.

“As we age we naturally become more prone to falls that cause injuries,” said Marlane Argianas, Resident Services Coordinator at The Watermark at 3030 Park. “We encourage everyone, not just people living with Parkinson’s, to attend this meeting to learn how to maintain an independent lifestyle and prevent these types of injuries from happening.”

The group fitness class, which was recently expanded to twice a week due to popularity, is designed specifically for those who have Parkinson’s disease. The class, which meets every Tuesday and Thursday, consists of a warm-up, balance and strengthening exercises, and a cool down/stretch period. The class is led by Cindy McGuire, Fitness Director at The Watermark and certified group exercise instructor with over 25 years of experience working with seniors.
