McCoy's Pub Wins Readers' Choice Best Burger in Stratford

The Stratford Center restaurant and bar wins this week's Readers' Choice contest.

McCoy's Pub beat out Hannah's Kitchen and Danny's Drive-In, among others, to win this week's Readers' Choice contest that asked residents who has the tastiest burger in Stratford. McCoy's grabbed a third of the vote -- 106 of 306 -- and received only one positive comment less than Hannah's, whose supporters were equally as devoted as McCoy's. Here's what one reader had to say about the Irish eatery: Susan: I am partial to McCoy's burgers! Always made with the best and freshiest ingredients. Glenn and the chef never cut corners when it comes to the best food for their valued customers. Actually, everything on their menu is delicious. Though this week's contest is over, you can still review past winners of Stratford Patch's Readers' Choice …

I didn't lose-I didn't vote. I just think we should be promoting more family oriented venues. BTW: You may want to activate spell check on your computer,or are you a little 'loose' from having fun at McCoy's?   more ›

Stratford Liquor Stores to Open Sunday

The governor plans on signing into law the bill that would allow Sunday liquor sales, and a few town stores say they will be open this weekend.

A new law allowing businesses to sell alcohol on Sunday, and on Monday holidays, is slated to go into effect this weekend. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is poised to sign into law Thursday a bill amending Connecticut's Blue Laws, giving permittees the option of selling liquor and beer from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The law, slated to go into effect immediately, also allows stores the option of selling on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day, and on Mondays following a Christmas or New Year's Day holiday that falls on a Sunday. Malloy will sign the bill into law Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Enfield Town Hall. After the law goes into effect the only state left to prohibit Sunday liquor sales will be Indiana. Who Makes Stratford's Best Burger?

In this week's Readers' Choice contest we want you to tell us who has the tastiest, juiciest, most delicious burgers in town -- and what makes them so darn good?

In its purest form it's just a beef patty on a bun. But today's burgers are much more complex, with toppings that range from the classic lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup and mustard to items that include everything from bacon, mushrooms, jalapenos and avocado to a fried egg or chili. You could even get a burger made from turkey meat or bison, or a veggie one, too. When it comes down to it, you could put just about anything on a burger. And there are some great restaurants serving some incredible burgers right here in Stratford. In this week's Readers' Choice contest, we want to know which place has the absolute best burger in town. Vote for your favorite in the poll and, most importantly, rate and review the place in our directory (by …

McCoy's Pub: Transplanting Ireland in Stratford

The story of Stratford's McCoy's Pub starts about 3,000 miles away.

The story of McCoy's Pub as most people know it today can be traced back to Dingle, Ireland. The coastal town is where, some four years ago, newlyweds Glenn Zuklie and his wife stopped off during a two-week-long honeymoon in the Emerald Isle. "The beauty of Ireland really struck me," said Zuklie, adding that locals in Dingle still speak Gaelic. "Everyone over there was very accommodating." At some point, locals directed Zuklie and his wife to a nearby pub. After being handed a pint of Guinness, Zuklie said there was a moment while he was enjoying his drink and looking outside at the "pebbles in the road with blades coming through" when he was struck with the desire to open his own pub. The pub's communal atmosphere was equally important in…

Phyl's Wins Stratford Readers' Choice Favorite Florist

Stratford Patch readers are thinking spring and have picked Phyl's Flowers & Fruit Baskets as their favorite florist.

With more than 700 votes being tallied, this week's Readers' Choice poll proved that spring is on everyone's minds. Phyl's Flowers & Fruit Baskets took off in the polls, holding the lead for much of the week and ending with 537 votes, which was good enough for 75 percent. Second place in the poll went to Booth House of Flowers, which had 20 percent of the total votes. Phyl's and Booth tied for positive comments, with five each. However, Phyl's had four 5-star reviews, whereas Booth had none. So the title of Reader's Choice favorite florist goes to Phyl's. Here are what some people had to say about the Stonybrook Road shop: Alexandra Gombar: "Phyl's Flowers is the BEST florist. Arrangements are always beautiful and fresh. Their designers …

Local Chatter on CT Matters: Stratford

Minimum Wage Hike Passes Connecticut House

Connecticut’s minimum wage could rise a quarter a year for the next two years to $8.75. A new study says that minimum wage increases do little to effectively help poor people.

The Connecticut House of Representatives approved raising the minimum wage from $8.25 to $8.75 in the next two years. The vote passed by an 88-62 margin and the bill’s fate is now up to the Senate. According to the Hartford Courant, the proposal was pushed by House Speaker – and U.S. Congress candidate - Chris Donovan. He reportedly backed a more aggressive bill, which would have raised minimum wage to $9.75 in two years and then tied future increases to inflation. Economists and politicians have never reached a consensus on the merits of raising the minimum wage and the potential effects on employment numbers. A new study from the University of Georgia states that raising the minimum wage doesn’t help poor people. From the study’s …

Actually it does nothing because what needs to be "fixed", the value of the dollar is never addressed. When I entered the work place in the early 70's, my $4 an hour salary could buy more than the proposed $8.50/$8.75 levels will today. So the new figures mean absolutely nothing in improving the quality of life.   more ›

Commercial Real Estate Vacancies Continue to Mount in Fairfield County

Vacant commercial real estate in the Stratford/Shelton submarket rises 4.8 percent in the last year, according to a report.

The average vacancy rate for Class A commercial office space in Fairfield County increased from 20.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011 to 21 percent in the first quarter of 2012, according to a report from commercial real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield. According to the quarterly market report, the Stratford/Shelton submarket saw the largest increase in overall vacancy rates, rising from 8.8 percent in the first quarter of 2011 to 13.6 percent in the first quarter of 2012. The increased vacancy rate in the Stratford/Shelton submarket is due in part to the 174,000 square feet of space that came on the market when Pitney Bowes moved its operations from Shelton to Danbury. Over the last several months Stratford Patch has put the …

Do you suppose the economy has anything to with these vacancies? Really- bad design or architecture of a building? Over development? Maybe in Vegas or Fla. Do you think the "great ones" experience at a fast food Burger King in Hawaii - saying "may I take your order" has anything to do with his magnificent skill at job creation? Fear not: I'm sure the GSA, Secret Service, EPA, IRS, DOJ, DOE, etc …   more ›
